Heinkel He-279 V-02 Spirale

A number of year ago a number of pictures surfaced of an aircraft looking like a Heinkel He-280 with a piston engine. This was rumoured to be the Heinkel He-279 Spirale, an aircraft powered by a DB604 24 cylinder piston engine mounted behind the cockpit. The aircraft in these pictures wore what appeared to be a standard RLM 70/71/65 camouflage and a fuselage code of a white 8.

Recently a number of new pictures were discovered showing another example of the same aircraft but coded white 7. Although the number is lower than that of the older pictures, the text on the back of one of the photographs indicated that this was the second prototype of the He-279.

This text says: “Heinkel 8-279 Zweites Versuchsflugzeug 2 juni 1944, Warnemunde”
